On augmented HEGY tests for seasonal unit roots

چکیده
The contribution of this paper is twofold. First we extend the large sample results provided for the augmented Dickey-Fuller test by Said and Dickey (1984) and Chang and Park (2002) to the case of the augmented seasonal unit root tests of Hylleberg et al. (1990) [HEGY], inter alia. Our analysis is performed under the same conditions on the innovations as in Chang and Park (2002), thereby allowing for general linear processes driven by (possibly conditionally heteroskedastic) martingale di erence innovations. We show that the limiting null distributions of the t-statistics for unit roots at the zero and Nyquist frequencies and joint F -type statistics are pivotal, while those of the t-statistics at the harmonic seasonal frequencies depend on nuisance parameters which derive from the lag parameters characterising the linear process. Moreover, the rates on the lag truncation required for these results to hold are shown to coincide with the corresponding rates given in Chang and Park (2002); in particular, an o(T ) rate is shown to be su cient. The second contribution of the paper is to explore the use of data-dependent lag selection methods in the context of the augmented HEGY tests. Information criteria based methods along with sequential rules, such as those of Ng and Perron (1995) and Beaulieu and Miron (1993), are compared.

Testing for Seasonal Unit Roots
This paper examines, both theoretically and through Monte Carlo analysis, the implications of applying the HEGY seasonal root tests to a process that is periodically integrated. As an important special case, the random walk process is also considered. In the context of the HEGY regression, the asymptotic distribution of the zero frequency test statistic is dependent on the coefficients of the p...
متن کاملNumerical distribution functions for seasonal unit root tests
When working with time series data observed at intervals smaller than a year, it is often necessary to test for the presence of seasonal unit roots. One of the most widely used methods for testing seasonal unit roots is that of HEGY, which provides test statistics with non-standard distributions. This paper describes a generalisation of this method for any periodicity and uses a response surfac...
متن کاملAn Empirical Study of Seasonal Unit Roots in Forecasting
We assess the usefulness of pre-testing for seasonal roots, based on the HEGY approach, for outof-sample forecasting. We show that if there are shifts in the deterministic seasonal components then the imposition of unit roots can partially robustify sequences of rolling forecasts, yielding improved forecast accuracy. We illustrate with two empirical examples where more accurate forecasts can be...
متن کاملSeasonal unit root tests and the role of initial conditions
In the context of regression-based (quarterly) seasonal unit root tests, we examine the impact of initial conditions (one for each quarter) of the process on test power. We investigate the behaviour of the OLS detrended HEGY seasonal unit root tests of Hylleberg et al. (1990) and the corresponding quasi-differenced (QD) detrended tests of Rodrigues and Taylor (2007), when the initial conditions...
متن کاملThe robustness of tests for seasonal differencing to structural breaks
Monte Carlo simulations are used to compare the power properties of three simple tests for the seasonal differencing filter when the data contain seasonal mean shifts. Overall, the results favour the HEGY–GLN test. 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
